Wetlands along the U.S. Gulf Coast provide valuable habitat for wildlife such as this Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens), as well as millions of other migratory bird species that visit the Gulf Coast as part of their annual migrations. Wetlands also help to mitigate the effects of storm surge and flooding on coastal communities, and provide valuable shelter for juvenile fish species.
